World Architecture News: Ka’upulehu Beach Club – Phase 1, Kaupulehu, Hawaii

Overlooking Kahuwai Bay on the North Kona Coast of the island of Hawaii, Ka’upulehu Beach Club is the social gathering spot and amenity for the new Ka’upulehu residential resort development.

Employing a philosophy rooted in the vernacular of island architecture, Phase 1 of the Ka’upulehu Beach Club includes the Bar and Dining Pavilions, Swimming Pools and an Event Lawn, as well Kitchen and Service facilities. de Reus Architects designs for the exposed timber structures were inspired by majestically crafted Polynesian structures, from the open web wood trusses to the connections, finishes and detailing were designed to a high level of craftsmanship.

The architecture was conceived as a series of open air, tropical pavilions, evoking a sense of familiarity by reinterpreting traditional forms. Finish materials, including cedar timber framing, cut basalt stone bases and stained concrete floors, were selected for character and durability. Details were designed with minimalist sensibilities. Set amidst the stark lava landscape, tiered swimming pools and minimalist tropical gardens are elegant in their simplicity. Architectural and landscape designs for this amenity were carefully and sensitively integrated with the dramatic Pacific coastline to provide a rich experience for members and guests.

de Reus Architects provided concept design through construction administration for the project which was completed on time and on budget in January 2009. AIA Honolulu presented a 2009 Award of Merit to de Reus Architects for this project.

Ka’upulehu development is comprised of 80 residential lots within a 485 acre property. The 11,300 s.f. Ka’upulehu Beach Club rests on 10 acres the development. A golf course is planned for Phase 2 of the Beach Club build out.
