Pahinahina – South Kohala Coast, Isle of Hawaii, Hawaii
The design intent was to achieve equilibrium with nature — an aesthetic balance where home, as a tropical sanctuary, fits into this severely beautiful setting with a quiet strength. This vision allowed design and landscape to evolve together, emerging as a powerful unified presence.
A Japanese-like sense of restraint is prevalent throughout the design. Pavilion-like hipped roofs convey a sense of island architecture, and the sinuous curves of the three lanai eaves of the main house intimately connect the architecture to the ocean. The deep lanais provide shade for outdoor living areas on the south side of the home and help cool interior spaces.
The clients’ desire for curves was accommodated in part by stone walls in curved segments, defining and bringing shape to external and internal spaces. There is a play of contrasts in the craftsmanship of these stone walls. The exterior lava stone, coarse in texture, transforms to soft, refined sandstone as one enters the home. The luxurious blending of natural woods lends the home a materiality that is both ancient and modern.
The tactile materials were selected for their elegance whilst offering durability and longevity. Custom recycled teak roof shingles blend elegantly into the warm earth tones of the exterior plaster walls, creating a perfect balance with the stark grey-black of the surrounding lava fields. The interior features warm-coloured sandstone set against limestone tiles and hardwood floors. Ceilings and beams of cedarwood pair well with doors and windows in rich teak.
