What at first glance appeared to be significant design constraints — a pointed wedge-shaped piece of property with a circular archaeological preserve in its midst and an easement along one edge — quickly became opportunities for a singular floor plan and an inventive composition.
Using a minimalist tropical approach, we created folded origami-like roof planes, providing shelter and allowing for a sculptural mix of interior volume. Lifted eaves bring light into the interior. A limited palette of materials and details are repeated throughout the home reinforcing the elegant simplicity of the architecture.
AIA Honolulu honored de Reus Architects with the 2007 Unbuilt Design Award for this Project.
