This club amenity is the main social gathering area for the high-end private residential resort community of 80 home sites in the historic Kaupulehu district on the South Kohala Coast.
The exposed timber structures are rejoinders to ancient Polynesian pavilions and exude an honest power and expression that complement the rugged lava coastline in this location — an adaptation of ancient forms that speaks to the best of island architecture, distilled to a simple shelter that captures the spectacular view where the Pacific Ocean meets the edge of this island.
An event lawn, tiered pools, and tropical gardens provide a natural theatre for experiencing the beauty of the locale. The materials incorporated consist of cedar timber framing, stained concrete floors and cut basalt stone.
The 2009 Award of Merit was given by AIA Honolulu to de Reus Architects for the Kaupulehu Beach Club.
