South Kohala Coast | Big Island Hawaii
Stretching along the South Kohala Coast at historic Kaupulehu, this 18,000 s.f. home is designed for casual tropical living and intended to support the closeness of family and future extended family. Features designed to achieve this objective, within the main hale, include formal gathering and dining areas and a large central kitchen with adjacent family room. Two other hales, separated by tropical gardens and water features, complete the home; one holding bedrooms suites, the other a theater and recreation room. Garden pathways replace traditional hallways and deep covered lanais provide protective shade for interior spaces while sheltering outdoor living areas with views to the ocean.
The architectural design concept was a series of tropical pavilions amidst lush tropical gardens. The owner's desire to incorporate curves in the home was translated into a distinctive roof design with a series of undulating eyebrows over the main hale lanais, as well as curved segments in both site and interior stone walls. Undercurrents of Japanese design sensibilities in the architectural detailing evoke quiet elegance.
